About the venue
In June 2005, Bishoff/Weiss opened a 1200 sq foot space in the East End of London just behind Hoxton Square. Hosting six to seven shows per year, the gallery encourages artists to use the space as a laboratory for experimentation, pushing the boundaries of aesthetics visually and conceptually. Working primarily with emerging international artists the gallery provides a platform for all contemporary art mediums including site specific works involving sculpture, artist moving image film and video, large scale installation and photography. The gallery programme promotes a strong dialogue both between the UK and the rest of Europe reflecting the backgrounds and experiences of the gallery’s founders while promoting a diverse and exciting international vision between young talent and more established artists.

The exhibition space, created specially by the artist, serves to heighten the viewing experience and emphasise intricate surface details. Strewn with objects and interacting figures, the triptych panels explore a space within her folkloric environment, where painted objects are influenced by the historical narratives of museum pieces. Hewitt turns these banal personal objects into artefacts that are re-invented in paint and re-contextualised by the viewer. Drawn from the artist's familial home, and despite their personalised history, they function as the backdrop for an unrealized theatrical performance.
In the centre of the gallery the artist has created a dark, cluttered workspace emphasising the blurred line between painted fiction and actual reality through physical objects and muffled music.
Hewitt’s works seek to excavate the subtexts which occur beneath the surface of everyday human interactions. Through the use of painted artefacts and reoccurring figures, the artist creates a personal mythology, allowing the viewer to interact with the multilayered narratives found in her work.
