Ten great art exhibitions in London this autumn
By Time Out editors
Posted: Fri Sep 5 2008
Unmissable art in the capital this autumn, including major shows of Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol, plus the V&A's 'Cold War Modern' and the Frieze and Zoo art fairs

'Cold War Modern' at the V&A © V&A
Francis Bacon
Sept 11-Jan 4 2009, Tate Britain
First major London show since 1985 of Bacon's visceral and iconic paintings to celebrate the centenary of the artist's birth.

Gerhard Richter
Sept 23-Nov 16, Serpentine Gallery
The German maestro teases British audiences once again with ‘4900 Colours: Version II’, a blaze of multicoloured pictures made up of randomly arranged swabs of bright hues, instead of a full retrospective.

Cold War Modern
Sept 25-Jan 11 2009, V&A
The V&A continues its brilliant series of annual design blockbusters by looking at the conflicting ideologies that created the space-age and utopian look of the 1960s, with over 300 objects from paranoia-inducing political posters to futuristic furniture and even that indispensable item that we should already be wearing, the ‘Portable Living Room’ helmet. As media sponsors of the show, Time Out will be offering readers two tickets for the price of one.

The Turner Prize 2008
Sept 30-Jan 18 2009, Tate Britain
Back in London after a year away in Liverpool, the Turner’s four contenders for 2008 are: Runa Islam, Mark Leckey, Goshka Macuga and Cathy Wilkes.

Concrete and Glass
Oct 2-3, venues in and around Shoreditch
Art and music exhibitions, projects and performances in venues and disused warehouses, shops and outside spaces.

Statuephilia
Oct 4-Jan 25 2009, British Museum
Artists and curators love nothing more than putting on a show in the gaps of a great collection, so five big-name sculptors, including Damien HIrst and Antony Gormley, have jumped at the chance to show new pieces in the nooks and crannies of the British Museum.

Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms
Oct 8-Jan 11 2009, Hayward Gallery
Andy’s back, or rather, he never went away. The influence that the bewigged one’s freeform production of films, videos and even soap operas has had on subsequent movies, advertising and television is under scrutiny in the Hayward’s big fortieth anniversary show. As media sponsors of the show, Time Out will be offering readers two tickets for the price of one.

Frieze Art Fair
Oct 16-19, Regent’s Park
Annual artfest with over 150 top galleries from around the world showcasing and selling their wares, plus special projects and a programme of talks, music and film.

Zoo Art Fair
Oct 17-20, Royal Academy of Arts
Fifty-seven up-and-coming galleries, project spaces, artist collectives, curatorial groups and publications, all less than six years old, from the UK and abroad.

GSK Contemporary
Nov 1-Jan 19 2009, The Royal Academy
An exciting season of art, film and performance sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, with support from Time Out, featuring serious cross-disciplinary action in shows such as ‘Molten States’ and ‘Collision Course’, as well as a temporary bar and restaurant by Bistrotheque. www.royalacademy.org.uk
